Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the newest member of our household, Licorice!
For those just joining us, this is the cat that donated blood to be used for Marta's blood transfusion. She was at the vet's awaiting adoption because a couple had brought her in, perfectly healthy, to be put to sleep because she no longer fit their lifestyle. Huh?! Luckily, Dr. Kirk convinced them to instead leave the cat there until a home could be found.
Licorice is a large cat. We haven't weighed her yet, but I'm estimating 12 pounds. She's only slightly overweight; she's not fat, she's just a large cat!
She's also starved for affection. And decidedly not shy about asking for attention! At the moment she's on my lap, sprawling about and demanding that I pet her. She got there by crawling up my back and over my shoulder. Like I said, she's not shy!
She spent a good portion of the day hiding under the bed in our bedroom, coming out from time to time for a bit of petting and exploration, but by now she seems to have decided that it's safe. She's been pretty tolerant of Lando so far, except when he laughs and runs toward her at a high rate of speed, at which point she heads for under the bed again.
After we had been playing with Licorice for a bit, Lando asked where Marta was. So far as I know, this is the first time he's asked. She'd been spending lots of time sleeping in the bedroom in recent months, so it's not all that surprising that he hadn't noticed her absence until now, particularly given the fact that he had a birthday party yesterday.
"Well," I said, "Marta was very old and was very sick."
He asked, "So she went to the vet?"
"Yes," I said... and then the conversation was over as he jumped down to play with a toy.
Hmm... Okay, so we still haven't really had the Death Talk.
I'll close this post with a photo of Marta:
